Sea Scouts Bayjammer Weekend 2007

Eight sea scouts and 4 leaders from Jackson Park Yacht Club's Ship Neptune 5212 competed in the Bayjammer Weekend July 13-15 at Menominee Michigan.  We competed against 15 other mid-west scout units.  This year we drove instead of sailing there, and we camped in a park on the beach.  Photo 1390 shows our crew in dress whites, ready to participate in the parade of units through town. From left to right:  Betty Holcomb*, Ronnie Baker, Javon Johnson, Daniel Primous, Dick Snow*, Brittany Fisher, Chris Johnson, Kyle Lewis, Alicia Jones, Timothy Parker, Pete Conglis*.  * identifies a leader.  Reggie Rush* took the photo.  Pete spent a day driving to Great Lakes Naval Center to obtain our uniform donations, and as a result we were told that we looked spiffy.
The weekend was filled with events.  Photo 1420 shows our tug-a-war team in action.  1408 shows the bucket brigade - you try to fill a 55-gal drum with water using a bucket with holes in the bottom that you hold over your head. A favorite was the mini-olympics.  First you climb over a wall (photos 1391 and 1399), then run through tires (1394), then jump rope (1396); did you know that boys can jump rope?  We learned how to make an eye-splice in a rope (1406).  We sawed an oak log using an old-fashioned cross-cut saw (1405).  Our novice sawing team didn't win a prize but came close to the time of the third-place winner.  We also did pretty well in log-rolling.  There were also two dances, and bowling.  We had a good time, and we learned by watching the other units.  We decided to practice more for next year's event, and also to generate more team spirit.  -Dick Snow
